Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of August 20, 2013
Owatonna Public Library (OPL) Board of Directors convened the monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at the Owatonna Public Library. The meeting was called to order by President Russ Dunn-Foster at 4:30 pm. In attendance were: President Dunn-Foster, Secretary Angela Sager, John Pfeifer, Don Overlie, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Assistant Director Renée Lowery, Children’s Librarian Darla Lager, and Administrative Assistant Dawn Sorensen. Vice President Eric Mattison was absent.
Overlie motioned to approve the July 2013 board minutes as presented, Sager seconded. All aye.
Pfeifer reported on the recent Southeastern Libraries Cooperating (SELCO) board meeting. Pfeifer is the newly appointed SELCO board member, representing OPL and Steele County. Overlie was honored as the exiting SELCO representative, having served three three-year terms. Pfeifer has volunteered for the Technology Policy Committee at SELCO. On August 26, 2013, Pfeifer will meet with SELCO Executive Director Ann Hutton and OPL Director Feltes regarding his duties as SELCO board member.
Feltes presented the financial report for OPL. Everything is on track.
Lager gave the Children’s Services report for July 2013. There were ten Storytimes held in July, with 710 attending. Garden Time with Louanne Kaupa is continuing through the end of August. In July, 35 people came to work in the garden. Grammy award winning Okee Dokee Brothers performed on the evening of July 23, 2013 to an audience of 193 people. The second Book Fair of the summer was held on July 25, 2013. The book fair was attended by 882 people, 641 children accompanied by 241 adults.
Feltes reported that circulation decreased by 3.8% for July 2013 compared to July 2012. Blooming Prairie Branch Library (BPBL) showed circulation increased 1.6% for July 2013 compared to last year. OPL had over 25,000 people walk through the doors in July 2013, up 8% compared to 2012. BPBL had over 2,300 people in July, up 16% from July 2012. OPL had 173 new borrowers for July 2013. BPBL had 10 new borrowers. Inter-library loans (ILLs) decreased for both locations, in both lending and borrowing of materials, when compared to July 2012.
Lowery reported that OverDrive usage is up. OPL continues to lead the region in OverDrive use. FreeGal, downloadable music use, is consistent with 2012 use. Lowery stated that FreeGal is now offering music video downloads to patrons. IndieFlix is a new film database that allows patrons to stream independent films. OPL plans more promotion for both FreeGal and IndieFlix this fall.
Feltes reported on upcoming programs at OPL and BPBL. The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation (BCBS) “Health info @ your library®” programs continued in August with “Running Mechanics, Running Injuries, and Preventative Exercises” presented by Jason Jacobs from Allina Health Owatonna Hospital. On August 26, 2013, OPL will show the documentary “A Place at the Table”. This documentary highlights the problem of hunger in the United States. A panel discussion, led by members of the community, will follow the film showing. Feltes is planning ahead to September for workshops for staff and the public for MNsure, the Minnesota Healthcare exchange/marketplace.
Feltes stated that on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, she will present the budget for 2014 to the Owatonna City Council. She asked board members to attend.
The board was presented with a progress report on the renovations in the Reading Room. The renovation project is possible in large part to a grant received by the Otto Bremer Foundation of Minnesota. Tierney Brothers will be installing new technologies in the Gainey Room and Teen Room mid-September. Magazine and newspaper racks are being installed in the Gainey Room. Painting begins in September, as well as carpet installation.
Dunn-Foster adjourned the meeting at 5:10 pm.
