Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of September 16, 2014

The Owatonna Public Library (OPL) Board of Trustees held the monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. In attendance were: President Russ Dunn-Foster, Vice President Don Overlie, David Marcoux, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Administrative Assistant Dawn Sorensen, and Children’s Services Librarian Darla Lager. Absent were: Secretary John Pfeifer, Meredith Erickson, and Assistant Director RenĂ©e Lowery.

President Dunn-Foster called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm.

Lager presented the Children’s Services report for August 2014 at OPL. Storytime was held four times during August 2014. It was attended by 211 children and adults. The Corrugation program was presented on August 6, 2014 with 73 children and adults in attendance. Garden Club with Sorensen and Louanne Kaupa continued on Wednesday mornings in August 2014 with 61 people in attendance. Lager visited Tri-Valley Headstart twice in August 2014. She read stories to 60 adults and children. Create-aCraft was a program held in August, with 83 people making crafts. The final Book Fair was held on August 21, 2014. It was attended by 886 people; 657 children met their reading goal and picked out a book to keep, and they were accompanied by 229 adults. Lager also attended the KODA Health Care Center’s “Blessing of the Backpacks” in August 2014. She read stories to a group of 18 children and parents.

Dunn-Foster presented the August board minutes to be approved. Marcoux made a motion to approve, and Overlie seconded. All aye.

Feltes presented the financial report for August 2014, and reviewed the program budgets with the board.

Feltes presented the library use report for August 2014. Circulation decreased at both OPL and the Blooming Prairie Branch Library (BPBL) for the month of August 2014 as compared to August 2013. At OPL, 19,862 items were checked out for August 2014. At BPBL, 2,953 items were checked out for August 2014. Inter-library loans (ILLs) lent out decreased for both locations for August 2014 as compared to August 2013. At OPL, 1,442 items were lent, and at BPBL, 404 items were lent for in August 2014. Items lent out were greater than items borrowed in for both locations for August 2014.

ILLs that were borrowed at OPL decreased for the month of August 2014 as compared to August 2013. At OPL, 1,152 items were borrowed, and at BPBL, 322 items were borrowed for August 2014. ILLs at BPBL increased for the month of August 2014 as compared to August 2013. The people count for both locations decreased for the month of August 2014 as compared to August 2013. At OPL, 17,463 people entered the doors in August 2014. At BPBL, 1,698 people entered the doors in August 2014. OPL had 136 new borrowers for the month of August 2014. BPBL had 6 new borrowers for the month of August 2014.

Feltes continued with the library digital use report. OPL had 1,056 eBooks and 233 eAudio items downloaded by 318 patrons in August 2014. This is the highest amount of OverDrive eAudiobooks borrowed in any month since OPL began the service. Kindle Fire tablet owners can now download the OverDrive Media Console application and can check out library eAudiobooks. Freegal, the online music database, had 94 patrons download 565 songs in 34 genres for the month of August 2014. Zinio, the online magazine database had 96 magazines downloaded for the month of August 2014. Nine movies were downloaded from IndieFlix, the online movie database for the month of August 2014.

Sorensen reported on upcoming programs at OPL. Sorensen is working with Librarian Mary Gontarek to schedule showings of the documentary “The Bully Project” at both OPL and BPBL in October. Sorensen is working with school social workers and staff at the Crisis Resource Center to help with the program. Rachel Hanel will present an author’s program on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 7:00 pm about her experiences growing up as a gravedigger’s daughter in Waseca, Minnesota.

The custodial contract at OPL has been extended through the end of October by City Administrator Kris Busse. The open custodial position at the library is still in the hiring process.

Feltes reported that Cindy McCleary, with Leo A. Daly architectural firm in Minneapolis, has been contacted to move forward with a feasibility study for a proposed addition to the library. Feltes asked the board for suggestions of members for a planning committee, and invited them to participate. The feasibility study’s purpose is to determine if the city of Owatonna needs a library addition and what options are available. The board discussed the the costs for the study. Feltes will discuss funding with Finance Director Rhonda Moen.

The carpeting in the Adult Services area of OPL was replaced during the week of September 8-12, 2014.
