Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of November 19, 2013
The Owatonna Public Library (OPL) board of directors held the monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the Owatonna Public Library. In attendance were: President Russ Dunn-Foster, Vice President Eric Mattison, Secretary Angela Sager, John Pfeifer, Don Overlie, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Assistant Director Renée Lowery, Children’s Librarian Darla Lager, and Administrative Assistant Dawn Sorensen. Jayme Krstich, designer from BKV Group, was also present.
Dunn-Foster called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Dunn-Foster made a motion to adjust the agenda to add Succession Planning to Old Business as 7.c. Overlie seconded, all aye.
Dunn-Foster presented a motion to approve the October minutes with minor changes made to the closed minutes. Board members present for the October meeting then approved the closed minutes with addendums. Overlie made this motion, and Mattison seconded. All aye.
Lager presented the Children’s Services report for October. Ten Storytimes were held on Tuesdays, and 282 people attended for the month of October 2013. Four Storytimes were held in October on Thursdays, with 295 people attending. This total includes the 130 people who attended the “Read for the Record” event held on October 3, 2013 in partnership with the Pearson Foundation. Lager continued to visit the Tri-Valley Headstart three times during October, with a total of 106 students, teachers, and parents attending.
Feltes presented the financial reports for October 2013. Board members reviewed the expense report for OPL. Feltes then presented usage report for both OPL and Blooming Prairie Branch Library. (BPBL) Both locations showed a decrease in circulation for October 2013 compared to October 2012. OPL had 106 new borrowers, and BPBL had 8 new borrowers for the month of October 2013. Inter-library loans (ILLs) showed materials lent out to other locations decreased for both OPL and BPBL for October 2013, compared to October 2012. ILLs borrowed in to OPL and BPBL from other locations also decreased for the month of October 2013 compared to October 2012.
Lowery stated that OPL continues to lead the southeastern Minnesota region in eBook and eAudio check-outs. Zinio, the magazine database offered to Steele County residents, continues to increase in use.
Sorensen reported that OPL is nearing an end to the “Health info @ your library®” programs for the year. Christy Tryhus will present “De-Stressing for the Holidays” at both OPL and BPBL for November 2013. There will be no “Health info @ your library®” programs in December at OPL or BPBL.
Feltes stated that the “Opportunities @ your library®” project is nearing completion. Jayme Krstich, the designer from BKV Group was present to offer a tour of the library to board members later in the meeting.
Dunn-Foster stated that the Succession Planning item on the agenda would be shelved for the December 17, 2013 meeting.
Dunn-Foster made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:10 pm to allow for the library tour from Krstich. Overlie seconded, all aye.
