Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of May 21, 2013
The Owatonna Public Library (OPL) Board of Trustees convened their monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Owatonna Public Library. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Russ Dunn-Foster at 4:30 p.m. In attendance were: Dunn-Foster, Eric Mattison, John Pfeifer, Don Overlie, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Assistant Director Renée Lowery, library employee Sarah Rehborg, and Administrative Assistant Dawn Sorensen. Angela Sager was absent.
Dunn-Foster made a motion to have the April board minutes accepted. Mattison seconded. All aye.
Dunn-Foster made a motion to adjust the agenda so that Rehborg could present the Children’s Services Report in Darla Lager’s absence. Mattison seconded. All aye.
Elections were held for President, Vice President, Secretary, and SELCO representative for the board. The appointments are as follows:

John Pfeifer-Southeastern Libraries Cooperating (SELCO) representative
Pfeifer’s three-year term begins July, 2013 and will expire at the end of June, 2016. He will have the option to serve two additional three-year terms. The Board thanked Overlie for his years of service as SELCO representative. Mattison motioned to have the slate approved, and Pfeifer seconded. All aye.
Rehborg is the temporary Assistant Children’s Librarian in the absence of Patty Nichols, who is recovering from surgery until July. Rehborg has worked at OPL since high school, returning for the Annual Book Sale and in the summer. The Smart Play Spot Grand Opening was held May 11, 2013. Staff from the Minnesota Children’s Museum were present, as well as local partners and representatives. Feltes spoke, as well as Sharon Stark, President of the Owatonna Public Library Foundation, which matched funds for part of this project. Vicki Jensen, State Senator for District 24, was present, and read to the crowd. Feltes stated that OPL is awaiting Spanish language signage for the space.
Feltes presented the April 2013 financial report, and reported all was on track for the year. The usage report showed OPL having over 24,000 items checked out for April 2013, and compared to April 2012, there was a 10% increase. Blooming Prairie Branch Library (BPBL) showed a decrease of 1% in circulation in April 2013 compared to April 2012. BPBL welcomed 5 new borrowers in April 2013. OPL had almost 19,000 people come through the doors in April 2013. OPL also had an increase in Inter-library loans (ILL), with 1,833 items being lent to other libraries, and patrons. 1,300 items were borrowed by OPL patrons for the month of April 2013. There is a consistent increase in lending and receiving ILLs at OPL for 2013. BPBL lent out 440 items and received 225 for the month.
Lowery reported on some measures of electronic usage, stating that eBook checkouts were up for April 2013. Over 1,000 items were checked out for the month. Over 100 eAudio items were checked out by patrons for the , the library’s digital magazine database, had a strong start in March, but use is down slightly for April.
Feltes reported on upcoming programs at OPL. The summer reading program kicks off on Friday, June 7th, 2013. Many entertaining programs are planned for the kids during the summer. The Smart Play Spot was installed in April, and is a huge success. Kids and parents love it! Steve DeLaitsch, a local artist, installed a temporary painting to complement the Smart Play Spot. OPL continues to offer World Films once a month. “Health info @ your library®” programs continue monthly at both OPL and BPBL. A Spanish language program is offered as well at OPL. “Opportunities @ your library®,” the program funded by the Otto Bremer Foundation, is progressing with renovations in the Reading Room on the second floor. The board expressed concern over a plan for the Library to pay the City of Owatonna employees’ labor cost from Otto Bremer Foundation grant funds.
