Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of June 17, 2014

The Owatonna Public Library (OPL) Board of Trustees held the monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. In attendance were: Secretary John Pfeifer, Meredith Erickson, David Marcoux, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Assistant Director RenĂ©e Lowery, Children’s Librarian Darla Lager, and Administrative Assistant Dawn Sorensen. Absent were: President Russ Dunn-Foster and Vice President Don Overlie.

Lager gave the Children’s Services report for the month of May 2014. Lager and staff attended the Family Festival at Willow Creek Middle School, and spoke with 134 parents and children in May 2014. Washington Elementary School kindergarteners visited and were given a tour, Storytime, and checked out materials. There were 44 students and teachers in each of the morning and afternoon groups. Saint Isidore Preschool students and staff visited in May 2014. There were 10 students and teachers at the library for a tour, Storytime, and to check out materials. McKinley Elementary School kindergarteners visited OPL in May 2014 and were given a tour, Storytime, and checked out materials. There were 46 students and teachers in the morning group, and 47 students and teachers in the afternoon group. Lager visited the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) group at Kid’s Korner in Owatonna, and read stories to a group of 41 students and teachers. The Shout-Out for the Summer Reading Program started with Lincoln Elementary School on May 23, 2014. The Children’s Services staff spoke to a group of 595 students and teachers.

Pfeifer called the meeting to order at 4:45 pm. Pfeifer made an adjustment to the agenda to add an item under New Business as 8.b. Southern MN Initiative Foundation grant.

Pfeifer presented the May 2014 board minutes to be approved. Erickson made a motion to approve, and Marcoux seconded. All aye.

Feltes reported on the library use for May 2014. Circulation at both OPL and Blooming Prairie Branch Library (BPBL) were down for the month of May 2014 as compared to May 2013. OPL had 150 new borrowers, and BPBL had 12 for the month of May 2014. At OPL, 15,163 people came through the doors in May 2014. At BPBL, 1,472 people came through the doors for May 2014. Both locations decreased in inter-library loaning (ILLs) as compared to May 2013. OPL lent 1,326 items to other libraries and borrowed 1,087 items from other libraries for the month of May 2014. BPBL lent 414 items to other libraries and borrowed 293 items from other libraries for the month of May 2014. Both items lent and items borrowed decreased when compared to May 2013.

Lowery gave the online use report for OPL. At OPL, 310 patrons downloaded 949 eBooks and 166 eAudio from OverDrive for May 2014. FreeGal, the music database had 91 patrons downloading 531 songs in 32 genres for the month of May 2014. Zinio, the magazine database, had 119 digital magazines downloaded in May 2014. IndieFlix, the movie database, had 6 movies streamed for May 2014.

Pfeifer briefly reported on Southeastern Libraries Cooperating (SELCO) news for the month of May 2014.
Feltes gave the financial report for OPL, highlighting programs in the budget for the board.

Feltes reported that the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation grant was accepted by the Owatonna Public Library Foundation.

Feltes reported on the partnership between the Owatonna Public Library Foundation and the Steele County United Way Women’s Leadership Council to launch the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Steele County. The Imagination Library will be yet another layer of support in literacy for children and families.

Feltes reported on a potential grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation. (SMIF) The board discussed possible options for early literacy opportunities in Steele County related to this grant.

Pfeifer adjourned the meeting at 5:15 pm.
