Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of July 15, 2014

The Owatonna Public Library (OPL) Board of Trustees held the monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. In attendance were: President Russ Dunn-Foster, Vice President Don Overlie, Secretary John Pfeifer, Meredith Erickson, David Marcoux, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Assistant Director RenĂ©e Lowery, Assistant Children’s Librarian Patty Nichols, and Administrative Assistant Dawn Sorensen. Absent was: Children’s Librarian Darla Lager.

Dunn-Foster called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Nichols gave the Children’s Services Report for the month of June 2014. The summer reading program Kick-Off was held on Friday, June 6th, 2014 from 3:00-5:00 pm. This was the first day that children could sign up for the Summer Reading Program. There was ice cream, passes to the RiverSprings Waterpark were handed out, as well as tattoos. The drumline from the Owatonna High School Marching Band started things off. Kick-Off day brought 1,347 people to the library. Storytime began on June 10, 2014. It was held 6 times in June 2014 and was attended by 471 people. The Farm Animal Friends provided by Medford FFA visited the library on the first day of Storytime. The animals were visited by 226 children and adults. Garden Club, led by Sorensen, is held on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-10:30 am. Among three sessions for June 2014, 50 gardeners planted, weeded, and watered the garden. Adventure Club, held in partnership with Steele County 4-H, is held every Wednesday afternoons throughout June and July 2014. The three Adventure Club sessions, led by University of Minnesota Extension (Steele County) staff, held in June were attended by 87 people. Lager visited TriValley Headstart twice in June 2014. She read stories to a group of 36 children and adults during her visits. Schiffelly Puppets performed Rapunzel on June 12, 2014 for an audience of 187 people. Lager and Lisa Boutelle, Desk Assistant in Children’s Services, participated in the annual “Have a Safe Summer” event held at the Four Seasons. “Have a Safe Summer” brings together many local organizations who provide safe activities for children in the summer. Lager and Boutelle spoke to 125 children and adults about the summer reading program and other events at the library. A magic show presented by Greg Skillestad on June 19, 2014. It was attended by 289 people. On Wednesday, June 25, 2014, Children’s Services presented a science program, “Crazy Concoctions,” attended by 23 people. The first of three book fairs was held on June 26, 2014. Every child, ages 0-14, who had read or listened to a book for at least twenty minutes a day for 10 days, earned one book. The book fair was attended by 752 children picked out a book, and 305 adults accompanying them for a total of 1,057 people. Nichols also announced the upcoming Imagination Library Kick-Off celebration will be held at the library on August 21, 2014 at 10:00 am. The Owatonna Public Library Foundation partnered with Steele County United Way-Women’s Leadership Council, and Owatonna Rotary. The board is invited to attend.

Dunn-Foster presented June 2014 board minutes for approval. Marcoux made a motion, and Pfeifer seconded. All aye.

Feltes gave the financial report for June 2014. Everything is on track at OPL. Feltes also explained the programs in the budget.

Feltes gave the library use report for June 2014. Circulation at OPL decreased 6.3% for the month of June 2014 as compared to June 2013.  At Blooming Prairie Branch Library (BPBL) circulation decreased for the month of June 2014 by 8.4% as compared to June 2013. At OPL, 178 new borrowers registered for the month of June 2014. BPBL had 10 new borrowers for the month of June 2014.  OPL lent 1,304 items in inter-library loans (ILLs) for the month of June 2014. OPL borrowed 1,138 items for the month of June 2014. Both items lent and borrowed decreased as compared to June 2013. BPBL lent 427 items for June 2014. BPBL borrowed 286 items for the month of June 2014. Items lent decreased, and items borrowed increased as compared to June 2013. At OPL, 26,824 people walked through the doors in June 2014, an increase of 2% compared to June 2013. At BPBL, 2,289 people visited for the month of June 2014, an increase of 3% when compared to June 2013.

Lowery presented the library digital use reports. At OPL, 311 people downloaded 1,002 eBooks and 159 eAudio for the month of June 2014. 103 online patrons downloaded 619 songs in 32 genres from Freegal, the online music database. Zinio, the online magazine database, had 134 downloads for the month of June 2014. 1 movie was streamed through IndieFlix, the online film database at OPL. Lowery gave a detailed report on mid-year digital use at OPL. Erickson reported that “Freegal is awesome!”

Feltes followed up on last month’s discussion on the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) early literacy grant. Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) in Owatonna is accepting the SMIF grant.
Feltes reminded the board that their presence is requested at the Imagination Library Kick-Off celebration held at OPL on August 21, 2014 at 10:00 am.

Feltes reported on the library’s Capital Improvement Plan requests submitted for 2015-2019 to the City of Owatonna. Feltes requested that the board rank projects of importance. Erickson clarified that library site repairs appeared to be the only Capital Improvement Plan requests. Other board members agreed.

Feltes reported on a letter she received from a resident of Owatonna expressing concern over the library’s recycling program. Feltes responded with an invitation to this person to discuss the issue further.

Dunn-Foster adjourned the meeting at 5:35 pm. Motion to adjourn was made by Overlie, and seconded by Pfeifer. All aye.
