Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of January 15, 2013
The Owatonna Public Library (OPL) Board of Trustees convened their monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Owatonna Public Library. The meeting was called to order at 4:32 pm by President Jill Holmes. Also attending were: Angela Sager, Eric Mattison, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Assistant Director Renée Lowery, Children’s Services Librarian Darla Lager, and Dawn Sorensen. Don Overlie was present via SKYPE from Surprise, AZ. Russ Dunn-Foster was absent.
Jill Holmes motioned to adjust the agenda, to allow Darla Lager to introduce her guest, Madison Lykken. Angela Sager seconded the motion. All aye.
Lager introduced Lykken, a student at Owatonna High School (OHS), who has been a student intern at OPL since the beginning of December 2012. She is enrolled in the “Career Mentorship” course at OHS under the direction of Tate Cummings. Lykken has a keen interest in writing, and was placed at OPL to foster her career ambitions. She has assisted in Children’s Services with patrons, programs, and worked alongside Feltes learning about budgets and other administrative tasks. Children’s Services was busy in the month of December with 1st grade visits for The Polar Express program. Lincoln, Washington, and McKinley Elementary schools visited for a tour and stories. Wilson Elementary school rescheduled in January. Lager was pleased that students and teachers from Washington School’s grade 1-3 Montessori program joined for the first time this year. Children’s Services also hosted a class from Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), and a Boy Scout troop and parents in December.
Feltes presented the Circulation Report for OPL. 15, 546 people entered the library in December 2012, a decrease of about 5% when compared to December 2011. Blooming Prairie Branch Library (BPBL) showed an increase of 39% since 2011 with 1, 825 patrons visiting. OPL had a 15% increase in new borrowers when compared to December 2011. BPBL added 10 new borrowers in December 2012. At OPL, customers checked out 1,997 items, a decrease of 24% in contrast to December 2011. At BPBL, about the same number of books were lent to and borrowed from other libraries as in December 2011. At 2,500 items, OPL experienced a slight decrease in items both lent and borrowed from other libraries.
Lowery presented updates on electronic media usage. OPL dropped the subscription to OneClickDigital, as usage was very low. Workshops were held on December 29, 2012 for eBook assistance. Workshops for OPL will be repeated on January 26, 2013 and held at BPBL on January 5, 2013. EBook checkouts increased from 4,750 in 2011 to 11,392 in 2012. Freegal use is down slightly since the beginning of service at 14,844 downloads in 2012.
In grant news, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation (BCBS) funds are providing our first of three classes offered this winter for “Healthy Info @ Your Library”. On January 17, 2013, “Beat the Winter Blues” will be presented with guest speaker Carolyn Wheeler from South Central Human Relations Center in Owatonna. Health info programs in Spanish, in partnership with Centro Campesino, will also be offered. In other grant news, through the Otto Bremer Foundation, Feltes will consult with BKV Group in regards to the renovations planned for the Gainey Room, Reading Room, and Teen Room at OPL. BKV Group architects designed OPL’s addition in 1992. The renovations for these rooms involve updating the spaces for technology and for community use.
Feltes also shared other grant news regarding seed donations from High Mowing Seeds and Seed Saver’s Exchange seed companies for the Owatonna Public Library School Garden in 2013. Dawn Sorensen spoke on applying for the grants, and how the grants will be used for seed starting and planting at the school community garden site. The Alternative Learning Center of Owatonna (ALC) is managing the garden space for 2013 and Sorensen shared that they will take an active part in planting this year.
Holmes made a motion to change the meeting date for February 2013. Mattison seconded. All said aye. Holmes made the motion to adjourn the meeting. Mattison seconded that motion, and all said aye. The board meeting adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
The next OPL Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 in the Gainey Room at the Owatonna Public Library.
