Owatonna Public Library Board Minutes of February 26, 2013
The Owatonna Public Library (OPL) Board of Trustees convened their monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the Owatonna Public Library. The meeting was called to order by President Jill Holmes at 4:35 p.m. Also attending were: Vice President Russ Dunn-Foster, Eric Mattison, Library Director Mary Kay Feltes, Assistant Library Director Renée Lowery, Children’s Services Librarian Darla Lager, and Administrative Assistant Dawn Sorensen. Angela Sager was absent. Don Overlie was present via SKYPE from Surprise, AZ.
Dunn-Foster made a motion to adjust the agenda, to allow Wil Natzel and David Petersen time to present their architectural bid. Mattison seconded. All aye.
Wil Natzel, long-time friend of the Library, and his partner David Petersen, of Design Plus Architects in Rochester, MN, presented a proposal for “Architectural Services for Interior Renovation” for the Gainey Room, Reading Room, and Teen Room at the library for 2013.
Mattison motioned to accept the minutes from the January meeting. Dunn-Foster seconded. All aye.
Feltes then presented the financial report for OPL, and stated that all was on track for 2013.
Lager presented the Children’s Services report. Wilson Elementary school visited for The Polar Express program that was rescheduled because of a snow day in December. 124 students and teacher were present for a tour, stories, and complimentary library bag. In January, there were nine Storytime programs, attended by 242 people. Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) held a “Perfectly Penguin” Family Fun Night as well. Lager noted that Patty Nichols, longtime Assistant in Children’s Services was back on Family Fun Night for the first time to present stories since her accident in September 2012. Lager also attended Project Community Connect, a community event held for individuals and families touched by homelessness. 30 individuals stopped at that event at the Library’s table.
Feltes reported on the library use report for OPL, stating that the items checked out were similar to last month’s numbers. 23,000 items were checked out from OPL in the month of January. Blooming Prairie Branch Library (BPBL) had a slight decrease in check-outs for the month of January. OPL had 119 new borrowers. BPBL had four new borrowers for January. Inter-library loans (ILLs) were at over 2,000 for OPL for items being sent to other libraries and 1,438 items borrowed from other libraries for the month. BPBL had 600 items go out from other libraries. The people count for OPL showed a slight decrease at 16,734 compared to January, 2012.
Lowery reported that use of OverDrive, the shared electronic books database, had increased this month as compared to the same month in 2012. Using funds from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation (BCBS) grant, OPL added $1000.00 worth of ebooks in to OverDrive for 2013. Freegal is showing steady use as well.
In addition to the eBook addition through the BCBS grant, OPL has provided “Health info @ your library®” health pamphlets to the community. In January, the first of the “Health info @ your library®” programs began both at OPL and BPBL. During the month, OPL hosted 2 programs, including a Spanish language program. 26 people attended the programs. At BPBL, 6 people attended the program in January. There are three programs scheduled each month, including a Spanish language program. Nancy Vaillancourt, BPBL Library Manager, is assisting along with Feltes and Lowery to schedule these programs for the year at both locations.
In regards to the Otto Bremer Foundation grant, Feltes reported that meetings are underway to move forward with renovations in the Gainey, Reading, and Teen Rooms at OPL.
Feltes reported that Holmes and Overlie had terms expiring in 2013. Overlie is the board’s SELCO representative as well as serving on Integrated Library System/Operations committee. Future candidates can be suggested for these positions immediately. Appointments are made by Mayor Thomas Kuntz in May of each year.
Holmes motioned to adjourn the meeting at 5:46 pm. Dunn-Foster seconded the motion, and the meeting was adjourned at 5:47 p.m.
The next meeting will be held on March 19, 2013 at the Owatonna Public Library.
