JOB TITLE: Golf Course Superintendent

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Park Director
DIRECTION OF OTHERS: All full-time and seasonal golf employees.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: A two year degree in turf management with three years of work experience in golf course turf management or equivalent.
NATURE OF WORK: This individual is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance operation of the municipal golf course, including the assignment of seasonal employees to work duties associated with the maintenance of golf operations. This individual shall be the person regarded as the expert in maintaining the golf course in an on-going manner from the standpoint of daily operations and how these operations coincide with use of the golf course by golfers. This person shall also assume responsibility for the day to day operation of the golf clubhouse.
WORK PERFORMED/AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Assigns seasonal personnel and clubhouse staff to duties as established by seasonal descriptions or work orders established by the Park Director.
A. Must instruct seasonal staff by way of in-service training for specific
maintenance duties.
B. Will be responsible for supervision and inspection of seasonal employees
duties.
C. Will prescribe high standards of performance and efficiency by seasonal
employees.
D. Recommends re-hire of seasonal employees to the Park Director.
II. Maintains records as prescribed by the Park Director.
A. Keeps records of personnel utilization and performance.
B. Keeps written report of treatment schedule for greens, tees, and fairways.
C. Will maintain an inventory of small tools, equipment, and supplies.
III. Makes recommendations to the Park Director on purchase of necessary supplies, materials, equipment and personnel essential to the operation of the golf course.
A. Will operate within the budget as approved for the current fiscal year.
B. Will make recommendations for purchase or replacement of major equipment
and golf course improvements to the Park Director.
IV. Shall be actively involved as a participant in daily grounds maintenance, and/or grounds improvements, and/or equipment maintenance.
A. Park Director shall be notified when major mechanical repairs are necessary
or unforeseen grounds problems arise.
B. During the non-golf season, shall be responsible to assist Park Technician II
with repairs of golf course equipment.
V. Shall demonstrate to staff, whenever necessary, the safe and efficient use of materials,
equipment, and methods necessary for the care and keeping of the golf course.
A. Knowledge of turn management and treatment applications.
B. Knowledge of mowers.
C. Knowledge of small equipment associated with golf operations.
D. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of work.
VI. Will be directly responsible to handle emergencies or acts of vandalism when contacted
by the Police Department.
VII. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees
and the general public.
A. Will maintain a calendar of events planned at the course and a calendar of
significant maintenance practices so conflicts do not arise with clubhouse operations.
B. Will effectively communicate with the Board of Directors for Brooktree Golf
Association.
VIII. Will develop and maintain a long-range plan for golf course renovation and
improvements based on planning and research of future physical needs.
IX. Will be directly in charge of administering golf maintenance operations in the absence of
the Park Director.
X. Shall stay abreast of current golf course maintenance practices.
A. City of Owatonna may allow employees to attend schools or conferences
which benefit the golf course operations.
B. Employee shall submit written report to Parks Director on any conferences or
schools attended.
XI. Will be responsible to establish golf leagues, including but not limited to the registration,
collection of fees, scheduling, maintaining league standings, handling league problems,
and arranging for awards. Will also sell in advance of, and during the golf season,
season tickets, gift certificates, and coupon books.
XII. Shall be responsible for marketing and promoting the golf course in advance of, and
during the golf season. Shall operate within an advertising budget established by the
City. Shall be expected to determine the best means of marketing/promoting so as to
increase usage of the golf course.
XIII. Shall prepare information for a monthly newsletter mailed during the months of March
through September.
XIV. Shall be responsible for ordering operating supplies and requesting building maintenance.
Shall manage the budget for the operation of the golf clubhouse. Shall approve all invoices before they are paid. Shall receive approval to make any purchase when a
budget line item has been totally expanded.
EXTENT AND TYPE OF INTERACTION WITH PUBLIC:
I. Shall attend meetings of the Brooktree Golf Association so as to maintain a with
the golfing public.
II. Shall directly or indirectly communicate to the golfing public the proper etiquette in use
of the golf course.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS:
I. A valid Minnesota Class C driver's license.
II. Pesticide applicator's license.
III. Class A golf membership
EQUIPMENT AND TOOL OPERATION:
I. Employee must be capable of operating a variety of equipment relative to this position
which shall include but may not be limited to: all turf and golf equipment and tools,
irrigation systems and tools, hand tools, power tools, computers, calculators, printers,
scanners, radios, and telephones.
WORKING HOURS AND CONDITIONS:
I. Hours may vary, but generally 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is an exempt position. Job requires weekend and holiday work during the golf season.
II. Machine shop environment and construction job site activities, which may include
walking, climbing, and bending, in a normal construction environment. This may include
exposure to the natural elements, dust, insects, and conditions that could be hazardous or
dangerous relative to construction sites.
III. As approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation and availability of funds, continuing education and training will be provided to ensure a competent level of ability to perform of this position and to allow maintenance of required licenses and certifications.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, sit, climb or
balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell. The employee must frequently lift
and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to seventy-five
(75) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
