Snow Sculpture Competition

Central Park – 100 E Main St, Owatonna

January 17 – 20 Postponed to February 14-17

Carvers:

Registration

Register your team today!  Registration deadline is February 8. There is no fee to participate! For this inaugural year, the competition is limited to four teams. If more than four teams register, four teams will be randomly selected to participate.

Dates

  • Team registration deadline: February 8
  • Carving begins: February 14
  • Carving must be done by 12:00pm February 17

Each team is expected to create their sculpture within the specified dates. There is no restriction on what time of day the artists choose to work but it is encouraged that teams work during times when spectators are in the park. Teams are also expected to complete their work by 12:00pm on Sunday so visitors can view completed work before the weekend is over.

Tools

Each team must provide their own tools and equipment. Teams may design and use their own tools at their own risk and liability.

Teams may ask competition personnel for mechanical (front-loader) assistance in moving large amounts or chunks of snow; call the Parks & Recreation Park Director at 507-456-3090 if you need assistance in moving snow. Competition personnel will regularly use heavy equipment to remove unwanted snow pushed into the plow lanes by sculptors.

Rules

  • Sculptures should be family-friendly and non-political in nature.
  • Teams must submit their sculpture design/idea for approval.
  • Only snow, water, and ice from the competition site may be used. No media may be brought in from outside the competition site.
  • Finished sculptures must be free of any colorant.

Important Things to Know

  • Be familiar with the rules.
  • Each competition team receives a block of compacted snow measuring eight feet long, eight feet wide, and six feet high (8' x 8' x 6'). Blocks are assigned by random drawing.
  • Compacted snow is heavy! One cubic foot (a square block that measures 1' x 1' x 1') weighs 15-20 pounds. Do not use your body to support, receive, or brace chunks that are falling from or being lowered down your sculpture! (Fun fact: The initial 8' x 8' x 6' block equals 512 cubic feet and weighs between 7,680 and 10,240 pounds. That’s 4-5 tons!)
  • The snow sculpture contest will take place in downtown Owatonna. Downtown Owatonna offers many places inviting places to warm up. Take time away from your sculpture to warm up, relax, chat with your fellow sculptors, and grab a bite to eat in downtown Owatonna.

Judging Criteria

Sculptures are evaluated by judges on a combination of factors, including:

  • Degree of difficulty
  • Execution (clean lines, proportions, overall completion, etc.)
  • Artistic expression
  • Creativity
